The cementing head is a crucial cementing device installed at the top end of the casing during cementing operations. It connects the casing and the surface manifold, serving as the central hub for the surface manifold and the wellhead during cementing operations. Here’s a detailed introduction to the cementing head:

I. Definition and Function

Definition: The cementing head is the equipment installed on the top of the casing string (or liner string) during cementing operations, connecting the upper end of the casing column to the cementing manifold.

Function: Through the cementing head, various operations such as circulating, injecting spacer fluid, injecting cement slurry, releasing rubber plugs, and displacing fluid can be completed. Additionally, it can withstand high pressures, adapt to various cementing processes, and, in case the float collar or float shoe fails, it can achieve pressure buildup during waiting on cement to prevent cement slurry backflow.

II. Structure and Operation

Internal Structure: The cementing head is pre-loaded with wooden or rubber plugs for cementing operations, typically an upper plug and a lower plug.

Operation Process: Before injecting cement slurry, the lower plug is inserted. After thepredetermined amount of cement slurry is injected, the upper plug is inserted, followed by pumpingmud or water to force the upper plug and cement slurry downward. When the lower plug is stoppedby the landing collar, the glass plate in its center hole is crushed under pressure, pushing all thecement slurry outside the casing. When the upper and lower plugs collide, the fluid passage is blocked, causing a sudden increase in pump pressure, indicating the end of cementing operations.

III. Types and Characteristics

There are various types of cementing heads, each with its specific application scenarios and characteristics, including but not limited to:

Single-Plug Cementing Head: Used to store one lower plug (or upper plug) before injecting cement slurry. Its main drawback is the need to stop circulation to insert the plug, which can cause the mud to gel and affect displacement efficiency.

Dual-Plug Cementing Head: Capable of storing two plugs, eliminating the need to stop pumping to insert plugs. The only necessary stoppage is for converting the operation line to the cementing line. This type improves efficiency but may not fit on smaller drilling rigs due to limited swivel length.

Liner Cementing Head: Designed similarly to casing cementing heads, used to hold “pump-down” (drill pipe) plugs during liner operations.

Simplified Cementing Head: With a relatively simple structure, suitable for cementing operations under specific conditions.

Clamp-Type Cementing Head: Connected through clamps for easy installation and removal.

Ultra-High-Pressure Dual-Plug Cementing Head: Suitable for high-pressure cementing operations, providing better sealing and pressure-bearing capabilities.

IV. Application and Precautions

Application: The cementing head is widely used in cementing operations in the oil and gas industries, playing a crucial role in ensuring cementing quality.

Precautions: When selecting and using the cementing head, it is essential to verify its model and technical parameters to ensure compatibility with the casing and cementing process. Additionally, operations must strictly follow relevant standards and procedures to prevent safety incidents.

In summary, the cementing head is an indispensable piece of equipment in cementing operations, and its performance and quality directly affect the success of the operation. Therefore, careful consideration of its type, characteristics, and application scenarios, along with adherence to relevant standards and norms, is crucial during selection and use.
